Unison numpties broad left have taken Umbridge at the support shown for Labour leader contender Keir Starmer. Crying foul and conspiracy and stirring up hate and dissent; nothing new there as they love an opportunity to beat on the union, the NEC and the General Secretary.
UNISON’s National Labour Link Committee met on the 8th January 2020 to discuss the outcome of the General Election and to consider endorsing a candidate for leadership of the Labour party following the failed Corbyn experiment. As you will all know, Labour suffered its worst defeat at the ballot box since 1935. On the doorstep t was clear that the then leader was not supported by most of the electorate, the manifesto offer of lollypops for everyone and the disastrous Brexit policy were some of the main reasons people would not support Labour.
The fact that many Labour heartland would rather vote for Boris Johnson rather than Corbyn, as shocking as that may be, evidences how out of touch Labour are with the electorate. Its one thing talking amongst ourselves, but it is the public we need to get behind us not the cultist factions. The priority for Labour should be getting elected into power, not placating the fantasy politics of the hard left.
UNISON’s National Labour Link Committee is made up of elected representatives from each region (except Northern Ireland) and Labour Party members/levy payers from the NEC. All members of the committee should be both levy payers and Labour Party members. The committee is empowered to make decisions regarding Labour party policies, procedures and nominations. It is the responsibility of the committee to make these decisions in line with the rules of the union and legislation.
Most Regional representatives on the National Committee reported that they had consulted LINK committee members in their own regions prior to attending the meeting on the 8th January. One individual said that they had consulted in their region but was not going to vote in the way that consultees had indicated. It was surprising to see that this individual later posted on social media about the unfairness of the process, hypocrisy to the max me thinks.
The hard-left faction was quick to comment about the choices made by the Labour Link Committee or rather the choice of Leader. They didn’t seem to have a problem with the choice of Deputy Leader. What is interesting to note is that an overwhelming number of commentators are not UNISON members so have no vested interest in UNISON’s activities or its democratic processes. Also, worth noting that many were social party members (strange that don’t you think?) In fact, a socialist party member penned a letter to the General Secretary complaining about the decision, calling for a special NEC meeting to rerun the process. This naive and ignorant person clearly has no knowledge of UNISON’s rules, its processes and most importantly the law relating to the management of political funds. Disappointing as this individual is a long-standing member of the NEC. Having has this pointed out to them, they are still insistent on pursuing this course of action.
All this along with the faux angst and ignorance, probably goes a long way to explaining why the voting public could not back Corbynism and why would they.
There has been very little if any acknowledgement form the hard left as to the magnitude of the catastrophe of the 12th December 2019. Idiotic comments such as “we won the argument”, just serve to make the party look idiotic reality deniers. Labour did not win any argument, if that had been the case, Corbyn would be sitting in No 10 with his feet up sipping a hot cocoa and there would not be a massive Tory majority in the house of commons.
I am sure this argument about the decision to recommend Starmer will rage on. The hard-left faction will no doubt continue to stir the shit pot and make all sorts of claims to discredit the union and the National Labour Link Committee. These parasites want to continue with a program of the ultra-left and have no conscious when it comes to making a difference. It’s all about them and it always will be. Look at the work that Starmer has undertaken on behalf of working people and the trade union movement, it’s a record that anyone would be proud of.
To make change we need to be in power, not sitting around stroking our egos because we are better socialists than anyone else. Successful politics is the art of compromise and credibility. Two important factors that the likes of unison numpties broad left would not recognize if they bit them in the arse.
